HC Deb 13 July 1931 vol 255 c2
1. Mr. W. J. BROWN

asked the Secretary of State for India the number of higher clerical officers employed in his Department as at 1st April, 1931, and the number of higher clerical officers promoted to higher posts during the period 1st April, 1930 to 31st March, 1931?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Wedgwood Benn)

The number of higher clerical officers employed in the India Office on the 1st April, 1931, was 23 substantive and one acting. There were no promotions to higher posts during the period 1st April, 1930, to 31st March, 1931.

Mr. BROWN

Will the Secretary of State be good enough to look into the situation with a view of improving the proportion of these promotions?

Mr. BENN

Certainly, we are always anxious to make avenues for talent.
