HC Deb 09 July 1931 vol 254 c2238
8. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Minister of Labour whether she will call for reports from local authorities as to any particular cases where they departed from her instructions of December, 1929, that materials for assisted works shall, as far as practicable, be of United Kingdom origin and manufacture?

Miss BONDFIELD

As I informed the hon. and gallant Member on the 2nd July, I have no reason to suppose that local authorities are not adhering to the conditions laid down as to the use of British material. I do not think therefore that I should be justified in calling for special reports as suggested. If the hon. and gallant Member has any specific cases in mind, perhaps he will give me particulars.

Commander BELLAIRS

Will the right hon. Lady ask the local authorities whether Section 10 of the Housing (Financial) Provisions Act, 1924, lays down that the Minister must not interfere with their buying in the cheapest market; and does not that interfere to some extent with the intentions of the circulars about buying as far as possible British material and goods?

Miss BONDFIELD

I will direct the attention of my right hon. Friend to the point raised.
