HC Deb 09 July 1931 vol 254 c2252
36. Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Health whether his attention has been called to the method of advertising certain British East Coast resorts by the tour in Holland of a light van; and if he will say what reply has been given to the representations made to him with a view to legislation for the removal of the restrictions upon local authorities paying for local advertising out of the rates generally?

The MINISTER of HEALTH (Mr. Arthur Greenwood)

I have no information as to the tour of a van in Holland to which my hon. Friend refers, but I may remind him that Parliament has this Session passed the Local Authorities (Publicity) Act which empowers town councils and urban district councils to contribute to any association, approved by me, which may be formed for advertising abroad the amenities of British resorts.

Mr. DAY

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that in such an important question as this an inquiry might be made?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I am willing to make an inquiry, but I have no knowledge of this particular matter.

Mr. ERNEST BROWN

Will the Minister of Health apply to my hon. Friend the Member for Harwich (Mr. Pybus) and ascertain the methods so successful in advertising Clacton-on-Sea and Harwich?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I heard a rumour that the hon. Member for Harwich was concerned in that experiment.
