HC Deb 07 July 1931 vol 254 cc1891-2
20. Mr. HAMMERSLEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the Government is prepared to pledge the resources of the British taxpayer in any approved scheme for the rehabilitation of British basic industries?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to him

out of the innumerable figures in this statement?

Sir WILLIAM MITCHELL-THOMSON

Would it be possible to get similar figures from the United States?

Mr. GRAHAM

As far as I know. I would not like to make a promise regarding other countries, but I believe that figures are available.

by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer yesterday as regards the cotton industry. It is not proposed to differentiate between the various basic industries in this matter.

Mr. HAMMERSLEY

Does that mean that in the reconstruction of basic industries Government assistance is ruled out?

Mr. GRAHAM

Yes, that is the position.
