HC Deb 06 July 1931 vol 254 c1696
11. Sir A. KNOX

asked the Secretary of State for India whether the division of all arms on which it is proposed to experiment in Indianisation will be a newly-raised division?

Mr. BENN

The scheme outlined by the Commander-in-Chief in India contemplates in the main the extension of Indianisation in existing units of the Indian Army.

Sir A. KNOX

Is it not the case that, if one whole division is Indianised, it will mean a very serious weakening of the strength of the Indian Army?

Mr. BENN

That is a separate question. The hon. and gallant Member asked me a technical question to which I have endeavoured to give him a reply.

Brigadier-General CLIFTON BROWN

Is it true that it is proposed to make the Indian Division complete with field guns and arms?

Mr. BENN

Oh, yes. I imagine that all arms will be included.

Brigadier-General BROWN

Is it not a fact that this will be the first time since the mutiny that they have been allowed to have guns?
