HC Deb 02 July 1931 vol 254 c1444
28. Mrs. MANNING

asked the President of the Board of Education if he can yet announce the intentions of the Board with regard to taking action upon the report of the Wood Committee?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

The more important recommendations of the committee involve legislation and are closely connected with the proposal for raising the school-leaving age; and it is not practicable to give any useful decision on them at the present time.

Mrs. MANNING

Will the President of the Board of Education tell me whether there is any connection between the reply which he gave to the preceding question and this one?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

I think so.

Mrs. MANNING

Does the right hon. Gentleman's Department realise that these mentally-defective children are a burden on the elementary schools, and will be a future burden upon the community unless the right hon. Gentleman takes some steps to deal with them?
