HC Deb 02 July 1931 vol 254 cc1464-5
75. Mr. JAMES BROWN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that in Ayrshire a substantial increase has been made recently in the prices quoted by local brickmakers for three and a-half inch composition bricks specified for housing schemes; and whether he intends taking any action in view of the effect that any increase in the cost of building materials will have on the housing activities of local authorities?

Mr. W. ADAMSON

From inquiries which I have made, it would appear that an increase such as is referred to by my right hon. Friend has been made. I have no knowledge of any economic conditions warranting such an increase, and I have caused the incident to be reported to the committee appointed to survey the price of building materials. I understand that investigations are being made on behalf of that committee, and the result will have my immediate attention, as I fully realise the adverse effect that any unwarranted increase in the price of building materials would have on proposed housing schemes at this time when so many local authorities are on the point of putting housing schemes in hand.

Mr. BROWN

Has the right hon. Gentleman any power to deal with the matter?

Mr. ADAMSON

As soon as I have the report of the Committee, I shall see if anything can be done.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

In the event of profiteering being proved, will the right hon. Gentleman take action?
