HC Deb 27 January 1931 vol 247 c767
2. Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs if he can state the precise nature of the research work which is being undertaken in connection with import boards, quotas, and tariffs in preparation for the Imperial Economc Conference at Ottawa; and whether this research work will involve additional expenditure?

Mr. THOMAS

The examination of the questions to be discussed at the Conference at Ottawa is being conducted by a Committee of the Cabinet with the help of the Government Departments concerned. I do not anticipate that it will be necessary to incur additional expenditure in connection with this examination.

Captain Sir WILLIAM BRASS

Will the Government enter this Conference with an open mind?

Mr. THOMAS

The Government will enter it with a single minded desire to do the best for this country, which is part of the Empire.

Sir W. BRASS

Will the right hon. Gentleman answer my question?

Mr. THOMAS

I asumed my answer covered the wider Imperial interest that the hon. Gentleman had at heart.
