HC Deb 27 January 1931 vol 247 cc789-90
38. Mr. MILLAR

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will be prepared to receive nominations of representatives of the Scottish herring and line fishermen to fill the vacancies on the Scottish Fishery Board; and whether he will take steps to secure in future a larger representation of fishermen upon the Board?

58. Major WOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he intends to proceed immediately to reconstitute the Fishery Board for Scotland, in place of the board whose term of office has just expired; and whether he will take into consideration the claims of the large number of fishermen on the south coast of the Moray Firth to have a representative on the Board?

The SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Mr. William Adamson)

The term of office of the members of the Fishery Board for Scotland, other than the chairman, has just expired and I am now considering the question of appointments to be recommended by me to His Majesty. I have given serious attention to the question of the representation on the Board of the interests of fishermen, and I shall keep this point fully in view in reaching my decision.

Mr. MILLAR

Is the right hon. Gentleman prepared to indicate whether he will increase the number of representatives of the herring and line fishermen on the Board, seeing that they represent by far the largest proportion of those engaged in the fishing?

Mr. ADAMSON

That is a point I have in view in considering the appointments.

Major WOOD

Will the right hon. Gentleman also consider the fact that the fishing inquiry may make a recommenda- tion dealing with the constitution of the Fishery Board, and, in considering the terms of the appointment, will he bear that fact in mind?

Mr. ADAMSON

I do not think that that is one of the recommendations of the Fishery Commission.
