HC Deb 26 January 1931 vol 247 cc612-3
78. Mr. GEORGE OLIVER

asked the Minister of Health if he has considered the communication sent to him by the Derbyshire County Council asking that the disqualification of a person receiving a pension under the Widows', Orphans', and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act, 1929, or the Old Age Pensions Acts should be removed where a person is an inmate of any workhouse or Poor Law institution for the purpose of receiving medical or surgical treatment, notwithstanding that such person was first admitted to the institution by reason of other causes; and whether he intends to introduce amending legislation to give effect to this proposal?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Miss Lawrence)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative: as regards the second part, my right hon. Friend is doubtful how far legislation on the lines suggested would be for the benefit of the pensioners in view of the rights of recovery possessed by the local authority.
