HC Deb 26 January 1931 vol 247 c589
15. Mr. REMER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what was the cost to the British Exchequer of the state visit to Abyssinia at the recent coronation; and if he has received ad-vices that the good feeling between Abyssinia and the British Empire has been improved thereby?

Mr. DALTON

The accounts of the Duke of Gloucester's Mission to Abyssinia are not yet complete, and it is, therefore, not possible to give the final figures of the cost, but it is estimated that it will be approximately £3,900. My right hon. Friend has every reason to hope that the visit of this Mission to Abyssinia will have strengthened the friendly relations existing between His Majesty's Government and the Government of Abyssinia. It will be recalled that the present Emperor of Abyssinia paid an official visit to this country some years ago.

Mr. REMER

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the present Emperor of Abyssinia is trying by all the means possible to give orders to foreign countries instead of to this country?

Mr. DALTON

No, Sir; I am not aware of that fact.
