HC Deb 22 January 1931 vol 247 c347
38. Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

asked the President of the Board of Education if he will furnish a return giving for three years to the nearest convenient date the number of districts, with their names, which have adopted the school canteen method, distinguishing between those which are self-supporting and those which receive financial aid from local education authorities, with the amount of aid given; the number of canteens in each district; the number and kind of meals provided free and for payment, respectively, and the cost per head; and the total number of children fed?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Morgan Jones)

School canteens conducted on a self-supporting basis are not included in the returns furnished to my Department, and I am, therefore, unable to give the complete information for which my hon. Friend asks. Such statistical information as is available in regard to the country as a whole is given on pages 112 and 141 of the report of the Board's Chief Medical Officer for the year 1929, and I am sending my hon. Friend a list of those local education authorities which were, at the latest date, making arrangements for the provision of meals for school children, with such other information as is available.
