HC Deb 22 January 1931 vol 247 cc342-3
27. Mr. WHITE

asked the Home Secretary if he is proposing to take action in regard to the recommendations of the Select Committee on Capital Punishment

Mr. SHORT

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my right hon. Friend to a question by the hon. Member for East Willesden (Mr. D. G. Somerville) on the 20th instant.

Mr. MARJORIBANKS

Is not the recommendation that the House should act upon these recommendations without a Bill without precedent?

Mr. SHORT

Perhaps the hon. Member will put that question down.

Mr. W. J. BROWN

In the meantime, will the Home Office see that capital punishment is not applied?

71. Major-General Sir ALFRED KNOX

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what was the cost to the Exchequer of the committee to inquire into the death penalty?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Pethick-Lawrence)

The expenditure incurred in respect of the proceedings and reports of the Select Committee on Capital Punishment amounts to approximately £1,500. Against this, receipts from sales of the reports amount up to date to approximately £50.

Mr. HANNON

Is not this a disgraceful waste of public money?
