HC Deb 20 February 1931 vol 248 c1635
1. Mr. STRAUSS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any decision has been reached regarding the compulsory restriction of tin production in Nigeria and the Malay States?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Dr. Drummond Shiels)

His Majesty's Government have approved in principle of the Governments of the Malay States and of Nigeria passing legislation to regulate the production and export of tin with effect from the 1st of March. The approval is subject to the Secretary of State being satisfied as to the details of the international scheme after negotiations with the representatives of the Netherlands East Indies Government and of the Bolivian Government and to the understanding that the working of the restriction scheme is controlled by a committee of representatives of the four Governments concerned, by which the interests of the consumers will be protected against any excessive rise in price.

Mr. STRAUSS

Can the Under-Secretary state how frequently it will be possible to vary the quota?

Dr. SHIELS

It will be periodic, but the actual period will be settled after consultation with the international interests concerned.
