HC Deb 18 February 1931 vol 248 cc1219-20

Order for Second Reading read.

Question, "That the Bill be now read a Second time, put, and agreed to.

Bill read a Second time, and committed.

Mr. FRANK SMITH

I object.

Mr. ERNEST BROWN

On a point of Order. Has not the Question been put and carried?

Mr. SPEAKER

Yes. I had collected the voices.

Mr. HOLFORD KNIGHT

On a point of Order, Sir. Directly the call reached this Bench, objection was taken by the hon. Member for Nuneaton (Mr. F. Smith) and myself, and I submit that that objection should be registered.

Mr. SPEAKER

As there is a Notice of Motion on the Paper for the rejection of the Bill I waited, after the Order had been read to the House, to hear if any objection was raised. Hearing no audible objection, I had to put the Question and collected the voices.

Mr. SMITH

On a point of Order. With great respect, Sir, I can assure you that objection was taken here by hon. Members, whether it reached the Chair or not, and I would appeal to you, in view of the circumstances, to accept that assurance.

Mr. FREEMAN

As soon as I heard the word "Now" from the Chairman of Ways and Means, on the reading of the Order, I also said "Object."

Mr. SPEAKER

I aim very sorry, but I had already collected the voices, and I cannot go back on it. Southampton Corporation Bill (by Order),

Read a Second time, and committed.

Ministry of Health Provisional Orders (Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire) Bill,

Read a Second time, and committed.
