HC Deb 18 February 1931 vol 248 c1232
27. Major GRAHAM POLE

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will give information showing which of the recommendations relating to the Indian population now resident in Mauritius, made in the report of Kunwar Maharaj Singh in 1925 and commended by the Government of India to the Government of Mauritius, have since been given effect to by the local Government?

Dr. SHIELS

The recommendations made in the report of Kunwar Maharaj Singh for the improvement of the conditions of the Indian population in Mauritius were in the main aimed at the general improvement of social conditions; for example, the improvement of housing facilities and the restriction of the sale of liquor. Improvements of this nature, which of course could not be confined to the Indian population, are continuously under the consideration of the Colonial Government, and various improvements have been effected in directions recommended in the report. It is impossible to give details within the limits of an answer to a question, but I may mention that my Noble Friend last year approved the draft of a Workmen's Compensation Bill to be introduced in the local Legislature. If my hon. and gallant Friend desires information on any specific point, I will endeavour to obtain it.
