HC Deb 17 February 1931 vol 248 cc1073-7
Mr. CHURCHILL

May I ask the Prime Minister a question about business? Since the announcement of business was made, the Chairman of Ways and Means has put down an important Private Bill for 7.30; and, in view of that fact, would the Government state how far they intend to go in the series of Bills which are before us this afternoon?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is quite true that, since the business was announced last Thursday, the Chairman of Ways and Means has put down the Surrey County Council Bill. I have no means of ascertaining how long the Debate on that Bill may last—[HON. MEMBERS: "Three hours!"]—but we

announced that we should take the first three Orders in addition to the Money Resolution. Of these Orders, the third—Unemployment Insurance [Money] (No. 2), Report—is urgently needed, and must be got. Regarding the first and second Orders, both of which are important, we should like to make progress, but perhaps it would be for the convenience of the House if the usual communications might be made during the day.

Motion made, and Question put, That the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]

The House divided: Ayes, 268; Noes, 152.
