HC Deb 12 February 1931 vol 248 c574
56. Rear-Admiral SUETER

asked the Home Secretary whether a number of fare-meters with black dials have been passed by the London authorities as suitable for taximeter cabs; why the use of such meters has been permitted in view of the fact that he gave an undertaking that the licensing authorities would refuse to pass taximeter cab meters which were not completely legible?

Mr. CLYNES

I am informed by the Commissioner that about one-third of the taximeters in use on licensed motor cabs show white figures on a black dial, the remainder having black figures on a white dial. As regards legibility, there is not, in the Commissioner's opinion, anything to choose between the two types, and both are regarded as acceptable if properly illuminated.

Mr. HURD

May I ask what progress the right hon. Gentleman has made in getting taximeters really legible since he was good enough to allow me to raise this question with him three or four months ago?

Mr. CLYNES

I think my reply is an indication that considerable progress has been made, and that in the case of the new taximeter cabs every satisfaction has been given.

Mr. HURD

How long are we to wait for all the taxi-cabs to be supplied?

Mr. CLYNES

I ask my hon. Friend to imagine the grievance which would arise if every taxi man was required now at once to get a new taximeter fixed upon his car.
