HC Deb 11 February 1931 vol 248 cc409-10
78. Mr. WEST

asked the hon. Member for Central Leeds, as representing the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, whether the Commissioners have now completed the building of working-class dwellings in Brixton, North Lambeth, Waterloo, Walworth and Newington; whether the Commissioners are also now engaged in slum-clearance work and building operations in Wandsworth; and whether any plans have been prepared by them for similar improvement work in Padding- ton in connection with the Bishop of London's Paddington estate?

Mr. G. MIDDLETON (First Church Estates Commissioner)

As my hon. Friend is absent, through illness, I propose to answer this question. The working-class dwellings built by the Commissioners in the areas named do not exhaust their operations in those districts though at the moment they have no scheme in progress in any of them. As already reported to Parliament, the Commissioners are proceeding with a rebuilding scheme off the Wandsworth Road, in the borough of Lambeth: they have no similar scheme in Paddington, nor any power to make one as the owners of the estate mentioned in the question.
