HC Deb 11 February 1931 vol 248 cc400-1
53. Mr. PRICE

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that the Cumberland County Council has rejected a plan, which has been advocated by smaller local authorities, for improving the road communication along the west coast of the county from Whitehaven to the borders of Lancashire; that the present state of the road is unsatisfactory for traffic, particularly in regard to bridges; and whether he is prepared to inquire into the matter with a view to having it reopened in co-operation with the county council?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Herbert Morrison)

Representations have been made to me by various local authorities in favour of this project. I understand, however, that the county council are of opinion that the present volume of traffic does not warrant the expenditure which would be involved and consider that attention should be concentrated on the improvement of the existing Class I road. This improvement is now in hand.
