HC Deb 11 February 1931 vol 248 cc378-9
11. Sir NAIRNE STEWART SANDEMAN

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will see that when talking-film equipment is installed in the British Navy only British-made apparatus is used?

Mr. ALEXANDER

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member of the Isle of Wight (Captain P. Macdonald) on 17th December (OFFICIAL REPORT, columns 1240–1).

Sir N. STEWART SANDEMAN

I understand that two American firms are trying to get these orders, which would give a great deal of employment for engineers and electricians in this country. Will the right hon. Gentleman use his influence to get them placed in this country?

Mr. ALEXANDER

As the House knows, experiments are being carried out with three British apparatus and two foreign, but the money that will have to be used for the conduct of these entertainments for the ratings is not money granted by Parliament. It is money belonging to the men themselves which they have contributed from their fund. I will do my best to arrange that, as far as possible, British apparatus is used, but I certainly cannot impose conditions
