§ Mr. PETHICK - LAWRENCEThe total staff employed in the Customs and Excise Department on 1st January last was 11,902, and the total cost of salaries and wages in the Department for the current financial year is estimated at approximately millions. The number of staff employed in the Department on 1st August, 1914, was 10,802, and the total cost of salaries and wages for the financial year 1914–15 was £1,843,000.
