asked the President of the Board of Education (1) the cost per scholar for elementary education in the areas covered by the Durham and London County Councils, respectively, for the years 1927, 1928, and 1929;

(2) the cost per scholar for higher education in the areas covered by the Durham and London County Councils, respectively, for the years 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930?

As the answers to these questions involve a number of figures, I will, with my hon. Friend's permission, circulate them in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The cost per child of elementary education, calculated upon the actual net expenditure of the local education authorities was as follows:

Expenditure on higher education generally does not admit of being expressed in terms of cost per pupil; but

These latter figures are net, after deducting receipts from fees, etc., and they do not include expenditure on loan charges or general administration.
