HC Deb 02 February 1931 vol 247 cc1436-7
67. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, in view of the delay in erecting an equestrian statue to the late Earl Haig and in view of the difficulty of securing a satisfactory model for a statue of this character, he will consider setting up a public memorial in an entirely different form?

Mr. LANSBURY

I assume that the hon. Member has in mind the possibility of the memorial to Earl Haig taking some form other than that of a monument. If so, I would remind him that a resolution praying His Majesty to direct that monument be erected at the public charge as a memorial to the late Earl Haig was made by this House. I have, therefore, no authority to do otherwise than endeavour to carry out its terms.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the general consensus of opinion as to the unsuitability of the two statues which have been proposed?

Mr. LANSBURY

I am only aware of a great diversity of opinion among certain people who write to the newspapers.
