§ 39. Mr. DONNERasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that fruit pulp, owing to its sweetness and other properties, forms a culture for germs of all types, and requires therefore hygienic 2042 conditions of manufacture; and what steps he proposes to take to prevent the importation into this country of Russian fruit pulp?
Sir H. YOUNGHygienic conditions are desirable in the preparation of fruit pulp and other articles intended to be used in the manufacture of food. Imported fruit pulp is examined at the ports under the Imported Food Regulations, which empower the sanitary authorities to seize for destruction any articles of food which are found to be diseased, unsound, unwholesome or unfit for human consumption. At present I have no information which would justify the prohibition of the importation of Russian fruit pulp in the interests of the public health.
