HC Deb 10 December 1931 vol 260 cc2041-2
39. Mr. DONNER

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that fruit pulp, owing to its sweetness and other properties, forms a culture for germs of all types, and requires therefore hygienic conditions of manufacture; and what steps he proposes to take to prevent the importation into this country of Russian fruit pulp?

Sir H. YOUNG

Hygienic conditions are desirable in the preparation of fruit pulp and other articles intended to be used in the manufacture of food. Imported fruit pulp is examined at the ports under the Imported Food Regulations, which empower the sanitary authorities to seize for destruction any articles of food which are found to be diseased, unsound, unwholesome or unfit for human consumption. At present I have no information which would justify the prohibition of the importation of Russian fruit pulp in the interests of the public health.

Mr. DONNER

Can the right hon. Gentleman state how long it is proposed to tolerate the importation of goods produced under conditions of slave and convict labour?

Mr. J. JONES

How long is the importation of Russian exiled supporters of the Tsar into this country going to be allowed?
