HC Deb 10 December 1931 vol 260 c2053
92. Mr. HURD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, to avert the recurrence of foot-and-mouth disease through the importation of vegetables from Holland, he will advise the Dutch Government that such vegetables must not be exported to this country from areas affected by the disease?

Sir J. GILMOUR

On the evidence available I am not prepared to adopt the suggestion of my hon. Friend.

93. Mr. HURD

asked the Minister of Agriculture what was the cost to the Exchequer of the outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in England and Scotland, which are now attributed to the importation into County Down of cauliflowers from Holland?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The cases of foot-and-mouth disease in England and Scotland which were attributed to the Northern Ireland outbreak cost the Exchequer £91,210.

Mr. HURD

In view of the necessity for economy, does not the right hon. Gentleman think that it would be well to save that money?
