HC Deb 10 December 1931 vol 260 cc2027-8
64. Mr. McENTEE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the salaries of His Majesty's diplomatic and consular staff abroad are still being paid on a sterling basis; and, if so, whether, in view of the hardship to these persons through the depreciation of the pound sterling, he is prepared either to pay such salaries on a gold basis or to make additional allowances in respect of the cost of living abroad?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Major Elliot)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the second part, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave on 3rd December to the hon. and gallant Member for St. Pancras, North.
