HC Deb 09 December 1931 vol 260 cc1858-9
55. Major MILNER

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether in adopting the method of the wheat quota he took into account the experiments in this method undertaken by the Governments of Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Greece, Estonia, Latvia and Peru; whether he has any reports as to the economic results of these experiments; and will he give particulars?

Sir J. GILMOUR

In preparing a scheme for a wheat quota specially suited to the economic conditions in this country, my Department has taken full cognisance of the methods adopted in every country where a quota method is known to be in operation, and of reports of certain investigations made on the spot in certain of those countries by a representative of the Department. To prepare a complete review of these methods would involve considerable time and expenditure which would not be justified at the present time, while the issue of a short and incomplete summary would be misleading.

Mr. THORNE

Has the right hon. Gentleman seen the statement by the millers that if the quota is adopted it will increase the price of the loaf in this country by 6d.?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The hon. Gentleman cannot expect me to take everything that is stated in the Press to be accurate.
