HC Deb 09 December 1931 vol 260 c1839
1. Captain ERSKINE-BOLST

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is satisfied that adequate provision has been made for the safety of British residents and property in Tientsin and Peking in view of the advance of Japanese troops into South Manchuria?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir John Simon)

There is a battalion of British troops at Tientsin from which a contingent is detached to serve as Legation Guard at Peking. There are also garrisons furnished by other Powers. Further, in an emergency, reinforcements could be despatched there with the aid of His Majesty's Navy. I am satisfied that, in these circumstances, British residents and property can be safeguarded.
