HC Deb 09 December 1931 vol 260 cc1844-5
14. Mr. MOREING

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies particulars of a concession of 35 square miles in the island of Ascension which has recently been granted; and will he state to whom the concession was granted and for what purpose?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The St. Helena Colony Development Company, Limited, has been granted the exclusive right of collecting and removing lava from Ascension Island. The concession was granted in 1927 and took effect from the 5th May, 1928. It is for a term of 25 years, with an option for an extension for a further 25 years. The lava is to be taken only from such areas as may be approved by the Governor of St. Helena. Two areas have so far been approved, one in the north of the island and the other in the south-east.
