HC Deb 07 December 1931 vol 260 cc1523-4
77. Mr. CRAVEN-ELLIS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he will take to evolve a monetary policy based on the convertibility of the currency into gold in order that the policy of import duties and Empire preference may be proceeded with?

Major ELLIOT

I cannot add to the statements which have already been made on the monetary position, but I do not share the view which my hon. Friend appears to hold that a policy of import duties and Empire preference must necessarily await the evolution of a monetary policy of the nature suggested.

Mr. CRAVEN-ELLIS

When are the Government likely to make a definite statement as to their intention of dealing with monetary policy, which is one of the most vital questions of the day?

Major ELLIOT

I have already stated that I could not add to the statement which has already been made.
