HC Deb 03 December 1931 vol 260 c1231
66. Vice-Admiral TAYLOR

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the large number of unemployed in this country, he will consider the imposition of a poll tax on all aliens not owning their own business or employing labour?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Chamberlain)

No, Sir. There are many objections to the imposition of such a tax, and in any case I do not think it would be a suitable instrument for effecting the object which my hon. and gallant Friend has in view.

Vice-Admiral TAYLOR

Is it not a fact that there are a great number of men unemployed owing to their jobs being taken by aliens?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

My hon. and gallant Friend is no doubt aware that the entry of aliens into the country is very carefully restricted.
