HC Deb 01 December 1931 vol 260 c942
97. Mr. KIRKWOOD

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will take steps to see that the men and women employed in the industries which receive the benefit of the Abnormal Importations (Customs Duties) Act will be secured proper trade union wages and conditions?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

I do not contemplate any interference with the existing machinery for the settlement of working conditions in such industries.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

Is the Minister not aware that, as the result of the protection which is going on, the prices of the necessaries of life are bound to rise, and that the workers will require higher wages; and is he going to lend his support to the working class in order that they may secure better conditions?
