HC Deb 29 April 1931 vol 251 cc1625-6
48. Commander OLIVER LOCKER-LAMPSON

asked the Secretary of State for India whether it is proposed to issue an invitation to Mr. Gandhi to visit this country for the purpose of taking part in the next Round Table Conference?

Mr. BENN

I would draw the hon. and gallant Member's attention to the speech of the Prime Minister at the concluding session of the Round Table Conference, and also to the statement issued on 5th March, in which he will find expressed clearly the desire of His Majesty's Government that Congress should be represented at the renewed discussions.

Commander LOCKER - LAMPSON

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think it advisable that Mr. Gandhi, in present circumstances, should not visit this country?

Mr. SPEAKER

That appears to be a mere matter of opinion.
