HC Deb 28 April 1931 vol 251 c1418
61. Mr. McELWEE

asked the Minister of Health whether he will introduce legislation to adjust the rent payable on all State-aided houses built to let to the ability of the tenant to pay?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Miss Lawrence)

Local authorities are already equipped with extensive powers of the kind suggested by my hon. Friend. These powers were much increased by the Housing Act, 1930, and, as at present advised, my right hon. Friend does not think further legislation is necessary.

Mr. McELWEE

Will the hon. Lady convey to the Minister the fact that there are people with incomes of £15 a week who are receiving public assistance by way of subsidies for rent from public funds subscribed by people who are only getting £2 a week; and could not that be adjusted?

Miss LAWRENCE

Perhaps my hon. Friend will communicate with me on the matter.

Captain WATERHOUSE

In view of these facts, will the hon. Lady consider doing away with all subsidised houses?
