HC Deb 21 April 1931 vol 251 c800
52. Mr. O. LEWIS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether his attention has been called to the serious storage problem arising from the accumulation of old newspapers at the British Museum; and whether he is prepared to introduce legislation to enable the trustees to destroy some of these papers?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

An extension of the building for the newspaper department of the British Museum at Hendon is being erected, as recommended by the Royal Commission on National Museums and Galleries. The Commission considered it undesirable to reduce the demands for storage accommodation by destruction of newspapers, and it is not proposed to introduce legislation for that purpose.
