HC Deb 20 April 1931 vol 251 cc595-6
40. Mr. HANNON

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he will make a statement to the House on the resolutions of the International Wheat Conference recently held at Rome; and in what expense this country has been involved with regard to its proceedings?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Dr. Addison)

The conference affirmed that it would be impossible to secure a reduction of the area sown to wheat throughout the world by any compulsory method, and that this could only be brought about through the pressure of economic conditions. It was recommended that steps should be taken to encourage the greater utilisation of wheat and better organisation of the world market. As an outcome of the conference, representatives of the wheat exporting countries, both European and overseas, are meeting in London next month under the Presidency of the High Commissioner for Canada. The only expenditure incurred was in connection with the travelling and subsistence expenses of two delegates who attended from this country.

Mr. HANNON

Will His Majesty's Government take any part in the conference in London next month?

Dr. ADDISON

Yes.
