HC Deb 16 April 1931 vol 251 cc338-9
28. Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Health whether he has received complaints regarding the emission of in- jurious fumes, smoke, and dust from the Southern Railway Company's carriage works at Lancing, Sussex; and what steps his Department are taking to prevent this nuisance to the surrounding inhabitants?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I have had no complaint since the reply to my hon. Friend's question of the 4th December, and the district council inform me that during recent months there has been no emission of smoke constituting a nuisance under the Public Health Act. They add that the smoke emitted is mainly from the electricity generating plant, which, it is hoped, will be superseded when power from bulk supply is available.

Mr. DAY

Can my right hon. Friend say when that reply was received from the district council?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I believe—I will not be quite sure—since my hon. Friend put down this question.
