HC Deb 16 April 1931 vol 251 cc343-4
38. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has been apprised of the proposal to be discussed at the impending meeting of the Board of the Bank of International Settlements for the formation of an international financial corporation to make loans to approved borrowers in various countries; whether, in view of the bearing of this plan on the payment of international debts and reparations, the Treasury has been consulted; and when details will be available?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

My right hon. Friend is aware that proposals of the nature referred to have been recently under discussion; but, as he understands, they are for the consideration of the markets, and do not call for any action or intervention on the part of His Majesty's Government.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Am I to understand that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, through the Treasury, is in touch with these negotiations, in view of their bearing on export trade is well as on reparations and debts?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

I have already said that my right hon. Friend is aware of the nature of the subjects under discussion.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Is it not the case that anyone who reads the newspapers is aware of the negotiations; and will my hon. Friend be good enough to tell me if the Government are being consulted on this very important matter?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

I have answered the question.
