HC Deb 16 April 1931 vol 251 c335
16. Mr. O. LEWIS

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the evidence given on behalf of the police at Marylebone Police Court on 1st April as to the method in which Russians are smuggled into this country; and has he any information to give to the House as to the extent of this practice?

Mr. CLYNES

Yes, Sir, but it seems that the alien in question, though she landed in this country irregularly, was arrested within a few hours. I am satisfied that proper vigilance is maintained, and that successful evasion of the control exercised by immigration officers at the ports is both difficult and infrequent, though it must happen occasionally.

Mr. LEWIS

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell the House why the Russians are so anxious to leave their own country?

Mr. CLYNES

Considering the Russian population, there is a large number left there.
