HC Deb 14 April 1931 vol 251 c7
8. Mr. FREEMAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade approximately the proportion of food for human consumption produced in this country and imported from abroad?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

The survey of the Agricultural Output and the Food Supplies of Great Britain issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries shows that, for the years 1924–5 to 1927–8, the proportion of home-produced food to the total available was about 40 per cent. This proportion is based on the values of home-produced food at the places of production and of imported food at the ports of landing. The meat obtained from animals fattened in this country is valued without any deduction for animals imported for fattening or for imported feeding stuffs used on the farms.
