HC Deb 30 October 1930 vol 244 cc181-2
14. Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Labour whether she has any figures and can state the number, of men from depressed areas who are now in employment in London; how many of these men have been found employment through the medium of the Borough (Walworth Road) Employment Exchange; and can she state the number of married men, from the depressed areas, who have been assisted to remove their families to the London area?

Miss BONDFIELD

Since October, 1928, some 14,000 men from the depressed areas have been found employment in London through the Employment Exchanges. Of these, 130 have been placed by the Borough Exchange. It is not known how many of them still remain in employment in the Borough or other districts in London. Up to the end of August last effective grants for household removal to the London area had been made in 770 cases.

Mr. DAY

Is any provision made for housing accommodation for the families before the transfers are made?

Miss BONDFIELD

I think that is one of the conditions of transfer.

Mr. DAY

Is not the hon. Lady satisfied that these arrangements have been made satisfactorily in advance?

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Are we to understand that the removal of people from distressed areas is still going on?

Miss BONDFIELD

Certainly. I wish I could have it going on at a, greater pace.

Mr. WILLIAMS

In spite of what you said before the election?
