HC Deb 30 October 1930 vol 244 c210
84. Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what action the Government have taken since 1st August or now contemplate to assist Mauritius and the other islands mainly dependent upon the cane-sugar industry to deal with the financial, economic, and social crisis now obtaining in those Colonial dependencies?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for DOMINION AFFAIRS (Mr. Lunn)

I have been asked to reply. My hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies hopes to be in his place in a few days. The situation of the sugar-producing Colonies has continued to exercise the anxious consideration of His Majesty's Government and all possible steps not in conflict with their declared policy have been taken to assist the industry and relieve distress. On 30th July, my Noble Friend undertook, in another place, to lay papers before Parliament in order to show what is being done, and the papers will be available in a few days.
