HC Deb 30 October 1930 vol 244 cc206-7
58. Mr. MORLEY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that certain brewers have increased the price of bottled ales in spite of the pledge given that the tax would not be passed on to the consumer; and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

Mr. P. SNOWDEN

I can add nothing to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for the Eye Division of Suffolk (Mr. Granville) on 5th June last, of which I am sending my hon. Friend a copy.

Mr. MORLEY

If I send my right hon. Friend some further information, will he be good enough to consider it?

Viscountess ASTOR

Is it not the case that the Chancellor of the Exchequer is just as much tied to the drink trade as ho used to say our party was?

Mr. SNOWDEN

I do not see how that question arises out of the original question. If the Noble Lady had seen my answer of some time ago to a question, she would have seen that the brewers are carrying out to the full the undertaking that they gave.

Viscountess ASTOR

And the price is going up?

Mr. MORLEY

If I send my right hon. Friend some further information will he consider it?

Mr. SNOWDEN

If my hon. Friend sends me information I will consider it. The Noble Lady seems to be far better acquainted with the price of beer than I am.

Viscountess ASTOR

Arising out of that—

HON. MEMBERS

Order, order!
