HC Deb 27 November 1930 vol 245 c1475
26. Viscountess ASTOR

asked the Home Secretary how many babies have been born in prison in England and Wales during the 12 months ended 31st July, 1930; how many pregnant women prisoners have been transferred to outside hospitals or maternity homes for childbirth; whether any special diet is allowed to pregnant women in prison; and, if so, what is the nature of such diet?

Mr. CLYNES

During the 12 months ended on the 31st July last, there were 14 births in prisons in England and Wales, and 2 in the Borstal Institution at Aylesbury. Special arrangements as regards diet are made in each case in accordance with the orders of the medical officer. No woman was transferred to a hospital or maternity home for childbirth and subsequently brought back to prison, but seven women were discharged from prison on that ground.
