HC Deb 27 November 1930 vol 245 cc1497-8
78. Major NATHAN

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the increase of overcrowding in the East End of London caused by the diversion of dwelling houses to indus- trial purposes; and whether he proposes to take any and, if so, what action to prevent such diversion in the future?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I am aware of the diversions of dwelling houses to industrial purposes in the district mentioned. Control over development of this character can best be secured by the contemplated legislation for extending planning powers to built areas.

Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

When may we expect that legislation?

Mr. GREENWOOD

It was in the King's Speech, and I have every hope that it will be on the Statute Book before the end of the Session.

Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

Will it come at the end of the Measures promised in the King's Speech?
