HC Deb 18 November 1930 vol 245 cc239-40
42. Mr. BLINDELL

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can make a statement respecting the inquiry held at Boston in connection with the proposed construction of a speedway on the East Coast between Boston and Skegness; can he say whether the scheme is likely to mature; and will work in connection therewith be available during the present winter?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade to his question on this subject on 9th April. I understand that the promoters have the scheme under active consideration, but the Department have not yet received the material required to enable a decision to be reached.

Mr. BLINDELL

May I ask, further, what is the exact purpose for which this inquiry was held, and, seeing that the inquiry was held 10 months ago, has the Board of Trade nothing to say with regard to the expenditure involved on this scheme?

Mr. GRAHAM

This is a rather long and complicated story, hut my present information is that the next step lies with the promoters of the scheme, and, until they take it, I am not sure that the Board of Trade can do more.

Mr. BLINDELL

Will the right hon. Gentleman communicate with the promoters of the scheme so that the uncertainty which exists in the district in regard to this proposal may be dispelled, and the people may know whether or not there is any hope of the scheme going forward?

Mr. GRAHAM

Without pledging myself to the precise method, I will certainly make further inquiries as to the exact position and inform the hon. Member.
