HC Deb 13 November 1930 vol 244 cc1831-2
29. Sir NICHOLAS GRATTANDOYLE

asked the Minister of Labour whether she has any statistics to show what number of persons transferred from depressed areas for employment elsewhere are now unemployed?

Miss BONDFIELD

I regret that statistics giving the information desired are not available.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Cannot the right hon. Lady without unnecessary trouble find out?

Miss BONDFIELD

It really would mean checking the movements of every unemployed person.

Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

Is it to be supposed that, having transferred these men, the Government take no further interest whether they get employment or not?

Miss BONDFIELD

Not at all.

36. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Minister of Labour from what distressed areas persons have been transferred for employment elsewhere during the current year, to what areas they have been transferred, and in what numbers in respect of the two types of areas, respectively?

Miss BONDFIELD

The number of vacancies in other districts filled by persons from depressed areas in the period 31st December, 1929, to 3rd November, 1930, was 27,500. I regret that it is not possible, from the records available, to give separately the number of persons who have been brought forward from each depressed area. I will circulate in the OFFICIAL. REPORT a statement showing the distribution of the vacancies filled over the Divisional areas of the Ministry of Labour.

Following is the statement.
