HC Deb 03 November 1930 vol 244 cc478-9
87. Mr. W. J. BROWN

asked the Postmaster-General the reasons which led him greatly to increase the proportion of women employed in the clerical poets in district managers' offices when the agreement reached in 1929 between his Department and the staff concerned apportioned the posts equally as between men and women?

The ASSISTANT POSTMASTERGENERAL, (Mr. Viant)

I have no knowledge of any such agreement. The representatives of the staff intimated a year ago their acquiescence in official proposals designed to increase gradually the proportion of women employed in these posts—mainly on routine accounting work. There has been no subsequent change of policy.

Miss RATHBONE

Has any effort been made either by the staffs concerned or by the Department to secure an equal allocation between men and women of the more remunerative posts in the service?
