HC Deb 28 May 1930 vol 239 c1287
40. Sir WALTER GREAVES-LORD

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that, notwithstanding the loss of life last December on the Seaford-Newhaven road and the known perils of the road in rough weather, the East Sussex County Council have decided to do nothing to make the road safer; and whether he proposes to take any steps to secure the safety of traffic on this road?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Herbert Morrison)

I am informed that the East Sussex County Council have decided to extend the existing protection wall and are of opinion that this course is likely to remedy the conditions to which the hon. Member refers. They will, however, review the position again at the end of a year.

Sir W. GREAVES-LORD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the so-called protection wall is a wooden fence 3 feet high put up in order to prevent waves of some 80 feet to 100 feet coming on to the roadway? Is he also aware that it is not proposed to extend it to the point where the fatality took place last December? Does he not think it would be advisable to transfer some of these grants to a necessary road in order to save life than to expend them on wholly unnecessary and extravagant roads?

Mr. MORRISON

I cannot answer for the accuracy of the statements of the hon. and learned Gentleman, but the points he mentions will be looked into.
